Top Namibia's Cultural
Diversity Travel through parts of the Kaokoveld, with a visit the
Ova-Himba |
|

GENERAL OVERVIEW One of the most rugged and scenically beautiful wilderness areas in Namibia! Travel to several lodges & guest farms
en-route to traditional cultural areas.
While enjoying visits to
the cultural
villages, spend time in between for some Game viewing activities and
scenic beauty. This safari will start at Namibia's International airport & end there again 14 days later. You will also visit
such natural wonders as the Ruacana- and Epupa waterfalls, both surrounded by
the
cultural lifestyles of their individual areas - although both are in the
Kunene River, they span areas
that are home to both the Ovambo- and the Ova-Himba peoples.
DAY- TO- DAY ITINERARY
| DAY 1: |
Meet your host at Namibia's International airport and be transferred to
a comfortable bed and breakfast facility on the outskirts of Windhoek to relax from the long flight, and acclimatize to Namibia. Entire afternoon and evening at own leisure. |
|
DAY 2: |
An early start as
you will have your first cultural experience with the Nama/Damara
people en-route to Damaraland. Very informative hikes and traditional food
before continuing towards a small bed & breakfast in an old, restored
mining town, at the Gateway to Damaraland. |
|
DAY 3: |
Travel further north
into Damaraland towards a luxury lodge. After lunch and a short siesta
- or cooling down in a pool - during the hottest part of the day, join a
guided walk through the Twyfelfontein mountains to view one of the largest
concentrations of ancient Petroglyphs (rock engravings) that form
part of our country's ancient, but rich cultural heritages. |
|
DAY 4: |
Today your journey
will take you to the un-official boundary between Damaraland and
Kaokoland. Your accommodation will be in the restored ruins of an old
Fort, used as an outpost during the German occupation. |
|
DAY 5: |
Truly entering the
wilderness of Kaokoland, you will today reach the
only
town in the entire Kaokoland, and have your first meeting with the
ochre-coloured Ova-Himba, traditional pastoralists of the
Kaokoveld. |
|
DAY 6: |
After breakfast, join
a day-trip excursion to the cultural "head quarters" of the
Ova-Himba at Epupa Falls in the Kunene River. You are now at the
northernmost point of Namibian territory on our border with Angola. |
|
DAY 7: |
Leaving the
Kaokoveld altogether today, you proceed to the erstwhile Ovamboland, and
stop over near the Ruacana Falls in the Kunene River. |
|
DAY 8: |
Traverse almost the
entire length of Ovamboland today, with lunch en-route, to arrive at your
next venue for the night, along the eastern border of the Etosha National
Park. |
|
DAY 9: |
En-route to your
next cultural experience in an entirely different environment and
landscape, you might wish to visit the mysterious Lake Otjikoto, as well
as the largest, in-tact Meteorite found on earth to date - the Hoba
Meteorite. |
|
DAY 10: |
An early breakfast,
then join the local guides on a two-day excursion into the northern
Kalahari desert to experience the true cultural traditions
of the San, or Bushman of the Kalahari. |
|
DAY 11: |
This Ju/Hoansi tribe
will guide you on a traditional hunting and gathering trip, providing you
with the necessary bow, arrows, digging stick and collecting skin -
which you may
purchase, if you wish
- to see what nature offers today. You may take your sleeping bag along,
or leave it, but
do not forget
to take along at least 5 litres of water, and a hat! Return to a rustic
rest camp. |
|
DAY 12: |
Unfortunately, all
good things must come to an end and you have to start turning back towards
Windhoek. To shorten the distance, cut down on travel-ling time, and allow
Namibia to offer you a proper farewell, stop at a luxury lodge for the
night. Here the words "African savannah" come to life physically. |
|
DAY 13: |
On the last leg back
to Windhoek, instead of making the transition from the wilderness to
civilization too sudden, you'll have the opportunity to gradually condition yourself at a
small Game Lodge en-route to the airport. Should you feel up to it, join a nature drive for a final view of our Namibian sunset on this, your last night in Namibia, Africa! |
|
DAY 14: |
Subject to flight departure time, you may have a leisurely breakfast and enjoy nature walks on the premises, or simply laze on a pool chair, viewing wildlife at the waterhole. Be transferred to Namibia's International airport to arrive in time for your departure flight. |
