THE ETOSHA NATIONAL PARK The Etosha National Park, Namibia, one of the best known National Parks in Africa, teeming with many species of wildlife, easily viewed on open plains

Certainly the one venue in Namibia that needs no introduction! Etosha had been there for many years, and is still regarded as the pride of Namibia. Not quite what it used to be, but still sufficient. Although the actual pan/depression measures ± 110 km X 60 km (69 miles X 38 miles) at its widest point, estimated at 47312 km (29572 miles), the original National Park - proclaimed in 1907 - covered an area of 80 0002 km (50 0002 miles). After several reductions over the years, it now measures 22 9122 km (14 3202 miles). Of this area, only the section along the length of the pan's southern edge is open to public visits, with a short extension on either side of the pan's two narrow edges. The pan or "great white place", is dry for most of the year. Only during exceptional rains in Ovambo land to the north, will the Ekuma- and Oshigambo Rivers flood the pan. At such times, thousands of pelicans and flamingoes gather on the flood plain to breed. Photographs on this page are therefore directly relevant to those safaris in the Seven Wonders of Namibia collection, that have the Etosha National Park included in their itineraries.
